چکیده

We investigated the histopathological alterations in tissues of freshwater mussel, Lamellidens marginalis response to oil effluent. Based on previous acute toxicity, two sub lethal [1/4th (11.88ppt) and 1/10th (8.55ppt)] concentrations effluent (hydrocarbon) were prepared exposed mussels. In a first series experiment, animals exposed/accumulated for 30 days [Ist, 8th, 15th, 22nd 30th days] by oil. second thereafter transferred clean water kept it up assess recovery pattern (depuration). At seven-day intervals, analyzed foot, gill digestive gland mussel. First experimental observation showed remarkable damages foot (disorganized outer epithelium, necrosis cell, formation lumina, disorganized muscle bundle); (disruption filaments, odema formation, necrosis, dis-aggregated cilia) (stoma, detached glandular vertical clefts, presence leucocytes, dense accumulation luminal material) also inducement are confirmed with aforementioned results. was found that tended accumulate duration-dose-dependent manner. Tissue burden mussels completely restored at day. The present findings may be early warning signals pollution. conclusion highly toxic marginalis.

Study of carbohydrate metabolism in selected tissues of freshwater mussel, Lamellidens marginalis under copper sulphate toxicity.

Sublethal toxicity of copper sulphate on carbohydrate metabolism was studied in selected tissues of freshwater mussel, Lamellidens marginalis. Levels of glycogen and pyruvic acid decreased while lactic acid showed an increase. Activities of LDH, SDH and MDH decreased while G-6-PDH activity increased. There appears to be a shift in the carbohydrate metabolism from aerobic to anaerobic type due t...

Histopathology of the Gill, Liver and Kidney Tissues of the Freshwater Fish Tilapia Mossambica Exposed to Cadmium Sulphate

An investigation on the effect of the heavy metal, cadmium sulphate (CdSo4) on the gill, liver and kidney of the Tilapia mossambica was carried out in the laboratory. Sixty fishes were exposed to continuous exposure to sub-lethal concentrations (0.084mg/l) of cadmium sulphate for a period of 20 days. The gill, liver and kidney of fish were removed for histological examination. The results showe...

Isolation and primary culture of gill and digestive gland cells from the common mussel Mytilus edulis.

As the marine mussel Mytilus edulis is commonly used as a sentinel species, it would be useful to develop a primary culture of the target organs most often in contact with the marine environment. This study reports an improved method for dissociating the digestive gland and gills of M. edulis and considers the effect of mussel storage on cell viability and functionality before culture initiatio...

Effect of chromium on protein metabolism of fresh water mussel, Lamellidens marginalis.

Effect of sub-lethal concentration of chromium was studied on the protein metabolism in adductor muscle, gill and mantle tissues of fresh water mussel, Lamellidens marginalis. Total proteins and RNA showed a decrease while free amino acids and protease activity showed an increase. Alanine and Aspartate aminotransferase activities showed an increase, while GDH activity showed a decrease. It may ...
